Vermont Business Magazine Brenda Siegel has been declared the winner of the Democratic Primary for Governor. Siegel will take on the Republican incumbent who has been in office since 2016. She makes history as the first bisexual woman, and first single mom to become the Vermont’s Democratic nominee for Governor.
“Vermont has made history. We will send a woman to Congress. We saw the most women, the most people of color, and the most LGBTQIA+ folks on the ballot than ever before,” said Siegel. “That is a lot of history, and I’m proud to be a part of it. I am humbled and grateful to be the Democratic Nominee for Governor - but our movement is only just beginning.
Vermonters cannot afford more of the same. That is why I will be spending every day of the next three months doing the work I have done for years - fighting for a Vermonter where we truly prioritize the needs of every person, a Vermont that will work for all of this. I am so grateful for all of the support that has gotten me to this point, especially from my son, Ajna, who has been by my side and continues to remind me of who I am and why I’m in this fight.”
Siegel has earned endorsements from the Sierra Club Vermont, Vermont Conservation Voters, Rights and Democracy, and VPIRG, organizations that understand her commitment to building a Vermont that works for all of us. Siegel has also been endorsed by leadership in the Vermont House and Senate and community leaders from across the state because of her leadership, knowledge, and experience moving legislation across the finish line.
Brenda Siegel is a housing and drug policy advocate and consultant, small business owner, and founder of a large ongoing project in response to Tropical Storm Irene to help rebuild the local economy. She teaches leadership, civic engagement and social justice in schools. She is Chair of the Newfane Democratic Committee and Delegate to the Windham County Committee. Siegel began her political work as an intern for Bernie Sanders in Washington D.C. in 2001. She sits on the State of Vermont’s Public Transit Advisory Commission as well as DCF's General Assistance Program Working Group.
If elected this November, Siegel would be the second woman in Vermont’s history and the first openly LGBTQ person and single mom to serve as Governor of Vermont. More information about Siegel’s campaign for Governor can be found at www.brendaforvermont.com.
