Vermont Agency of Transportation This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will have traffic impacts on state highways throughout Vermont for the week of September 13. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.
Interstates
I-89 Berlin – The bridge deck replacement project continues. Lane and speed reductions are in place; crossovers are being utilized. Motorists should expect a slowing of traffic on VT 62 throughout the week.
I-89 Hartford – Sharon – A resurfacing project continues. Work will occur both day and night this week, with lane reductions in the vicinity of active construction. A speed reduction to 55 mph will be enforced when lane closures are in effect.
I-89 Sharon – A bridge rehabilitation project continues. Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction; crossovers are being utilized. Motorists: be aware of a work zone speed reduction.
I-89 White River Junction – Our partners at NHDOT are working on a multi-year bridge replacement project on I-89 over the Connecticut River. Motorists should expect lane and speed reductions over the bridge.
I-91 Fairlee – A culvert replacement project is underway just north of Exit 15. Motorists should expect lane-width restrictions and speed reductions in the area.
I-91 Hartford – Motorists will encounter continuous lane closures on I-91 in both directions between Exits 12 and 11 as crews continue bridge repair operations.
I-91 Rockingham –The bridge replacement project nears completion. Both northbound and southbound travel lanes are open to traffic. Expect narrow lanes; please use caution.
I-91 Weathersfield – A bridge deck replacement project continues at Exit 8. Lane and speed reductions are in effect in each direction as southbound traffic is merged to the northbound bridge using a crossover.
Around the State
Berkshire – A culvert replacement project continues along VT 118 just north of its intersection with VT 105. A detour around the project site remains in place.
Burlington – Work on the Shelburne Street Roundabout project is underway. A new traffic pattern is in place along U.S. 7 (Shelburne St) between Flynn Ave and the intersections with St. Paul Street/Union Street and Beech Street. U.S. 7 northbound traffic is reduced to one lane beginning at Flynn Ave.
Motorists should expect lane closures and one-way traffic (eastbound) on Locust Street, Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Gove Court will be closed to non-residents.
Burlington – South Burlington – Work has resumed on the concrete slab rehabilitation project on U.S. 7 and the Westbound I-189 off ramp. Lane closures are in effect. Traffic will be maintained with a single lane in each direction.
Burlington Waterfront - The AMTRAK/Greenway project continues. College Street is currently closed to vehicular traffic at the waterfront rail crossing. The road will reopen to traffic on Friday, 9/17. Bike and pedestrian access will be maintained.
Calais – A bridge replacement project is underway along VT 14 just south of its intersection with Pekin Brook Road. Motorists will encounter one-way alternating traffic controlled by flaggers during the day, with a traffic light at the bridge during off hours. Expect some delays.
Castleton – Motorists will encounter lane closures with alternating traffic at the intersection of VT 30 and VT 4A as a sidewalk construction project gets underway.
Cavendish – Weathersfield – A roadway reclaim project nears completion on VT 131. Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic in the vicinity of multiple operations. Plan on reduced speeds and some delays.
Chelsea – Thetford – A resurfacing project continues along VT 113. Motorists should expect delays as crews begin paving at the Chelsea end of the project.
Chester – Springfield – Multiple bridge replacement projects are underway on VT 11 between VT 103 in Chester and VT 106 in Springfield. Expect one-way alternating traffic at multiple points along this route, with minor delays in several locations.
Essex – Expect one-way alternating traffic along VT 117 at its intersection with VT 289 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. Plan on delays. Two-way traffic with lane shifts will then be in place for the rest of the week; traffic control will be present.
The westbound VT 289 on-ramp remains closed; motorists will be shifted to the VT 289 eastbound ramp.
Fair Haven – A culvert rehabilitation project is underway on U.S. 4. Motorists can expect to encounter single-lane closures heading eastbound between Exits 2 and 3.
Fair Haven – Rutland – A paving project is wrapping up on U.S. 4. Motorists should use caution as crews remove temporary traffic control devices at various locations along this route.
Fayston – A paving project continues along VT 17. Motorists will encounter areas of one-way alternating traffic as crews work on line striping, shoulder installation, and bridge joints.
Groton – Newbury – Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 302 with minimal delays as crews continue rehabilitating drop inlets and work on guardrail and sign installation.
Hartford – Motorists should expect minimal traffic impacts on U.S. 4 and VT 14 as crews continue work on signal systems and sidewalks.
Motorists can also expect minimal impacts along Sykes Mountain Avenue and U.S. 5 for sidewalk installation and shoulder work.
Hartland – A bridge deck replacement project is underway along VT 12 over Lulls Brook. A multi-week closure of the bridge is in effect. A signed detour utilizing U.S. 4 and U.S. 5 is in place. Please plan accordingly.
Johnson – A slope remediation project continues along VT 15. Motorists should expect one-way alternating traffic with minimal delays in the project area.
Johnson – Morristown – Motorists should expect traffic delays and areas of gravel roadway on VT 15 and VT 15A as crews continue the second reclamation pass. There will be daywork and nightwork throughout the week for milling, paving, and underdrain operations.
Motorists should also exercise caution when entering and exiting the Marble Works on Middle Seymour Street due to continued construction on the Amtrak rail platform.
Newbury – A bridge replacement project is wrapping up just north of the junction of Boltonville Rd. and U.S. 302. Expect one-way alternating traffic at the bridge throughout the week.
North Hero – Grand Isle – Drawbridge construction continues along U.S. 2 - day and night. A speed reduction remains in place. Mariners: the drawbridge will open at the top of the hour between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. each day. To request an opening or to communicate with the bridge tender, please use Channel 13 or call 802-372-4360.
Pittsford – Multiple roadway reconstruction activities on U.S. 7. One-way alternating traffic at times throughout the week, creating moderate delays. Motorists should proceed with caution through new traffic patterns and lane shifts. A speed reduction to 35 mph remains in effect.
Plymouth – A multi-week closure of VT-100 between U.S. 4 and VT 100A is in place. Traffic will be rerouted from the south side to VT 100A and from the north side to U.S. 4. Through-traffic is not permitted.
Plymouth – Bridgewater – Expect one-way alternating traffic with delays along VT 100A for guardrail work and paving from 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Monday – Friday.
Proctor – North Street remains closed to through-traffic at the location of the bridge project over the Vermont Railway until mid-October. A signed detour is in place.
Richford – Jay – Motorists should expect one lane of alternating traffic along VT 105 in multiple locations for a roadway rehabilitation project, resulting in delays.
Ripton - A roadway and streambank stabilization project on VT 125 is underway. A one-way alternating traffic pattern will be in effect at times throughout the week resulting in minor delays.
Rockingham – Our partners at NHDOT are working on a rehabilitation project on the Church Street Bridge connecting Vermont and New Hampshire. Motorists should expect intermittent, alternating one-way traffic and some delays.
Shelburne – So. Burlington – A series of signal improvements continues along U.S. 7 at intersections between McIntosh Avenue and Swift Street. Motorists should expect nighttime lane closures in the areas of operation.
Springfield – A roadway resurfacing project is underway along VT 106 and VT 10. Expect one-way alternating traffic in various locations and plan on delays.
Williston – Due to the closure of Muddy Brook Bridge on Kimball/Marshall Avenue, motorists on U.S. 2 will see an increase in traffic interruptions and should expect extended delays during peak commute hours in the morning and evening. Plan for extra travel time through the area.
Motorists will also encounter a temporary detour with lane shifts along U.S. 2 near its intersection with Industrial Avenue for an intersection improvement project.
Wilmington – Brattleboro – A resurfacing project is underway along VT 9. Motorists can expect alternating one-way traffic with flaggers as crews continue drainage and slope work in Wilmington working towards Marlboro.
Winooski – A concrete slab rehabilitation project is wrapping up along U.S. 7 and West Allen St. (the Winooski Circulator). Work is scheduled for Sunday - Thursday nights (09/12 -09/16). Expect lane closures from 7:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m.
Woodford – A ledge stabilization project continues on VT 9. Eastbound traffic is reduced to one lane; a lane shift for westbound traffic is in place through November. A speed reduction is also in effect. Brief periods of flagged traffic this week to allow trucks in and out of the construction zone.
North Hero-Grand Isle Drawbridge Construction Update - 9/10/2021
TRAFFIC IMPACT: US Route 2 at the temporary drawbridge is open to two lanes of traffic. The contractor is working from 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday through Saturday.
The temporary bridge has a speed limit of 25 mph. There are tight curves approaching the temporary bridge, and trucks are advised to reduce speed to 15 mph. Bicycles should use caution while crossing the bridge.
The work zone speed limit is enforced, and individuals have been ticketed for excessive speeding. Obeying the speed limit is extremely important for everyone's safety.
NOTICE TO MARINERS: The drawbridge opens on the top of the hour between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM, daily. You may request a bridge opening by contacting the bridge tender on Channel 13 or at 802-372-4360. The bridge will not open unless a request is made.
All mariners must pass with extreme caution and NO WAKE.
CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES: On the west side of the existing bridge, the contractor has been working to install reinforcing steel and formwork for the approach wall and south horseshoe wall sections of the pier. Concrete is being placed today. Next week, the crew will continue to work on the south horseshoe section.
On the east side of the existing bridge, the contractor mobilized a new crane. The Manitowoc 999 crane has a capacity of 275 tons and is slightly larger and taller than the previous crane. This week, the contractor began preparing the third lift approach wall and final channel side parapet wall for concrete. Concrete will be placed today. Next week, they will continue forming the third lift of the piers by working on the north and south horseshoe sections.
