Saint Michael's College 114th Commencement is Thursday in two outdoor ceremonies

Vermont Business Magazine The College's 2021 Commencement will take place this coming Thursday, May 13, on the Durick Library Lawn. Saint Michael’s is pleased to be able to celebrate its 114th Commencement in person and with guests. These plans were announced to students on April 14 as a result of changes the State of Vermont has made in its health and safety guidelines. To comply with all State health and safety guidelines, the events will be outdoors and divided into two ceremonies held at the same location, at different times.

Thursday, May 13, 2021
GOLD CEREMONY—10 a.m. (All students receiving a BA degree)
PURPLE CEREMONY—1 p.m. (All students receiving a BS or Master’s degree)

The ceremony will be outdoors, rain or shine, so please plan accordingly. Two fully vaccinated guests will be permitted for each student participating in a ceremony. "Fully vaccinated” is defined by the CDC as being two weeks after one’s final shot. For our Commencement this means receiving one’s final dose on or before April 29.

A link to a livestream will be available from the Commencement Page on the College website on the day of the ceremonies. The recording of the ceremonies also will be posted there after the events.

A virtual Baccalaureate Mass will be livestreamed from the Chapel of Saint Michael the Archangel at 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 16. The purple and gold tulips all around campus are up just in time for the occasion.

Good Prize winners named in business, history

geschwindKileyGlenn ’56 and Susan Good established the Good Prize for Excellence in Business Administration and History to recognize academic excellence in both a pre-professional field and a liberal arts program. The award comes with a $500 cash prize to the graduating senior with the highest grade point average in those two majors. Glenn Good died on July 23, 2020, but his legacy remains on campus through this Prize. Nearly 30 people attended a Zoom ceremony the afternoon of Wednesday, May 5 this week to celebrate this year’s two student recipients of the prize: Megan Geschwind ’21 (business), top photo at right, and Meaghan Kiley ’21 (history). After an informal virtual “meet and greet” among participants to start the ceremony, Krystyna Davenport Brown, vice president for institutional advancement, gave the official welcome before Karen Popovich, chairperson and associate professor of business administration and accounting, presented the Business Award to Megan Geschwind, followed by Professor George Dameron of the history faculty who presented the History Award to Meaghan Kiley. Dameron, who is retiring, has been Meaghan Kiley’s adviser and for those reasons presented that award, after he was introduced by History Department Chair Kathryn Dungy, associate professor of Caribbean and Latin American History. Awards from these two prizes honor Glenn Good’s lifetime success as a businessman in banking and his belief that students should be exposed to, and excel in, a true liberal arts education. The Good Prize was established in 2017. Honorees have included: Kassidy Snair ’17, Zachary Maroon ’18, and Morgan Vasseur ’19, and last year Delaney Patterson and Sophia Bates, Class of 2020.
