Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) will participate in a roundtable discussion at the University of Vermont focused on hunger and Vermont’s local food system. Leahy chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee and has the most seniority on the Senate Agriculture Committee. The discussion will be convened by the UVM/ARS Food Systems Research Center and facilitated by Dr. Meredith Niles.
Participants will include Hunger Free Vermont, the Vermont Foodbank, the School Nutrition Association of Vermont, NOFA-VT and the University of Vermont. Participants will discuss Vermont’s experience with mass feeding programs through the pandemic and how to transition to more sustainable models which link households in need with Vermont’s local food system.
The discussion will be open to the press.

Leahy will be joined by UVM President Suresh Garimella to announce federal support for the Food Systems Research Center. The Center, established with funding secured by Leahy in 2019, is a partnership between UVM and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS). It is designed to study all aspects of the food system, from production through consumption, including food access by underserved Vermonters.
