As US cases rise, Scott and Levine urge continued vaccination

Vermont Business Magazine Vermont has the highest rate of vaccination against COVID-19 in the United States. But cases are increasing, with cases on the rise here and across the nation. Still, the Vermont vaccination rate is highest in the nation. Governor Scott and Health Commissioner Mark Levine do not believe that a return to mitigation measures is necessary in Vermont, even as the CDC is recommending some indoor mask wearing in some hot spots in the US.

These are mostly in the Midwest and South. However, Dr Levine is suggesting that Vermonters who travel to higher COVID regions should get tested when they get back to Vermont.

Dr Levine paraphrased the CDC in saying that the US is now in a pandemic of the unvaccinated. While there are some "breakthrough cases," even in the unlikely case of getting COVID if you are vaccinated, it will be a less severe case.

The VDH is reporting only one COVID death in Vermont in the month of July and is the only state without a death this week. The VDH is reporting today 11 COVID cases and 259 total deaths statewide since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020. See data dashboards below.

The governor said Vermont is still doing well despite a small increase in cases locally even against the backdrop of a spike in other parts of the country. He noted that the Lamoille County Fair opened this week.

He and Dr Levine believe that Vermonters are well protected. The one caveat are people between 18 and 29, who are getting vaccinated at less than 60 percent. They reminded Vermonters at the usual Tuesday press conference that getting vaccinated not only protects you but everyone else, not only friends and family, but also strangers.

If you are 12 to 17 years old, look for clinics that offer the Pfizer vaccine and bring a parent or guardian with you.

Walk-in appointments are available at these store pharmacies: Costco, CVS, Hannaford (other than Barre), Kinney Drugs, Price Chopper/Market 32, Rite Aid, Shaws, Walgreens, Walmart, and at these pharmacies: Northfield Pharmacy, UVM Medical Center Outpatient Pharmacies.
