Chip Mason to retire from the Burlington City Council

Endorses Ben Traverse for Ward 5 in Upcoming Election

Vermont Business Magazine Councilor Chip Mason announced today that he will retire from the Burlington City Council. The Ward 5 Democrat also announced that he is endorsing Ben Traverse to take his place in Ward 5 in the upcoming election.

Below is a full statement from Councilor Mason:

After more than fifteen years serving the City of Burlington, including the last ten as the Ward 5 City Councilor, I have decided it is time for a break and to not seek re-election. This is not a decision I have come to lightly, as it has been an honor to represent the South End and to work with my colleagues on the City Council.

During my time on the Council I have been proud to be a consistent advocate for policies that make our city more affordable, more livable, and more accessible. I have enjoyed collaborating with Mayor Weinberger and my colleagues on shared priorities. While I believe we have made significant progress over the last decade, it has not come without its challenges. When the Council has been divided, my positions have been based upon what I believed to be in the best interests of the City even if contrary to current public opinion. I have tried my best to communicate with my constituents and explain my reasoning.

Serving on the City Council has been equally challenging and fulfilling. The time commitment has grown exponentially with the complexity of the issues. Local polarization on issues has mirrored that of national politics and meetings have become increasingly uncivil. A deep thank you to my wife and children for their patience and support during my tenure. I remain vested in Burlington’s future and look forward to continuing to serve the community but in different capacities.

There remain many challenges facing our community that I believe the Council must dedicate their time to in the coming weeks, months, and years. We will need thoughtful representatives committed to real progress. That is why I’m so happy to learn that my good friend Ben Traverse has decided to run for the Ward 5 City Council seat.

I will be enthusiastically supporting Ben at the Democratic Caucus on December 19th and campaigning with him until Town Meeting Day on March 1st. As a longtime resident, a parent, and community leader I know that Ben will lead with thoughtfulness, experience, and a true spirit of collaboration. He will focus on the issues that affect Ward 5 and residents across the City like affordability, public safety, and infrastructure. I hope you will join me in supporting Ben and keep the City moving forward.

Thank you,

Chip Mason
