GMP named a 2021 Environmental Champion Utility on Earth Day

‘Best-In-Class’ Utilities Named for Dedication to the Environment Based on Customer Feedback

Vermont Business Magazine Customer reviews earned Green Mountain Power (GMP) top spots on the 2021 Environmental Champion Utility List, joining 30 other utilities from around the country as ‘best-in-class’ for dedication to the environment. GMP earned the No. 1 spot among utilities in the east region and the No. 6 spot overall. The study of customers was conducted by Escalent, a behavior and analytics firm, which released the list in conjunction with Earth Day.

“We are pleased to designate Green Mountain Power a 2021 Environmental Champion. Their customers rated them highest among electric utilities in the east on commitment to environmentally friendly energy, supporting local green initiatives and overall environmental dedication,” said Chris Oberle, senior vice president at Escalent.

GMP’s energy supply is 95% carbon free and 64% renewable, and GMP is committed to being 100% carbon free by 2025 and 100% renewable by 2030. GMP empowers customers with programs to help them reduce their carbon emissions and costs, including electric vehicle (EV) incentives, EV charging infrastructure programs, energy storage and incentives to switch to clean home heating and cooling. GMP is also launching the first-in-the-nation microgrid in Panton, Vt. in June, and GMP will partner with a few more communities each year to create similar resiliency zones, which will keep the lights on for customers in the community center, if the larger grid has an outage.

GMP’s programs are designed to help lower costs for all customers, and a customer in Woodstock recently wrote in about his experience with GMP and our energy storage program.

“I’m happy to be a part of the Powerwall Program. Such a great thing for GMP to offer and promote. Hope you are allowed to expand in the future. We need progressive utilities like GMP to lead the way for others to follow and to protect our environment,” he wrote.

“Feedback from our customers inspires us to move even faster toward an energy system that is carbon-free, resilient against intensifying weather and powered by energy generated closer to where it is used. We are especially honored to receive this distinction because it comes from the customers we serve,” said Mari McClure, GMP president and CEO.

More than 74,000 residential customers of the 140 largest utilities were surveyed about dedication to the environment. Among the findings, customers cite significant improvements on utility support for environmental causes and dedication to clean energy, and they favor investments in technology to reduce climate impact.
