Cotes are new owners of Williston Observer

Vermont Business Magazine The Williston Observer, the town’s weekly newspaper of record, is pleased to announce a transition to new ownership. Longtime owners Marianne and Paul Apfelbaum of Williston Publishing and Promotions have sold the paper to Twin Ponds Publishing, owned by Williston residents Susan and Rick Cote. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Susan Cote will assume the role of publisher, while retaining the current newspaper staff. Marianne Apfelbaum will be staying on through a transition arrangement to ensure smooth handover of the business.

“Since moving to Williston in 2010, we have appreciated the local reporting, business information and context provided by the Observer. This paper serves as an important glue holding our community together and helping us connect with our neighbors and area businesses and organizations,” Susan Cote said. “I am eager to continue the strong tradition of the paper built by the Apfelbaums over the years, as well as explore new directions for bringing value to our readers and advertisers.”

“I think people are going to be very happy and welcoming of the new owners who are equally as committed to community journalism and serving the community as we are,” said Marianne Apfelbaum. “We hope the Cotes enjoy owning the paper in this wonderful community as much as we have.”

Susan Cote has a background in marketing and communications, including positions in consumer product and brand management, as well as educational publishing in organizations ranging from small businesses to the Fortune 100. For 10 years, she was a senior marketing leader at Green Mountain Coffee Roasters in Waterbury. Her volunteer work has included research and writing in support of gender equity in the coffee industry.

The Williston Observer provides coverage of town government, business and community activities, as well as relevant regional and lifestyle content. Published weekly and mailed free to every home and business in Williston, the paper has additional rack distribution in Williston and neighboring towns.

The paper is part of the Burlington Area Newspaper Group (BANG), offering comprehensive regional coverage for advertisers. Paul and Marianne Apfelbaum purchased the paper, which was founded by several women residents in 1985 as the Williston Whistle, in 1994 and adopted the current name in 2003.
