Barr Hill Gin named 2020 Spirit of the Year by USA Spirits Ratings

Earned International Competition’s First Ever 100-Point Score

Panel of industry experts awards six medals to Vermont-based distillery

Vermont Business Magazine USA Spirits Ratings, a global spirits competition featuring hundreds of entrants from over 45 different countries, handed Barr Hill Gin its first ever 100-point score at this year’s event. Produced by Vermont-based distillery Caledonia Spirits, Barr Hill Gin was awarded several prestigious medals by the competition’s panel of expert judges, including 2020 Spirit of the Year and Gin of the Year.

USA Spirits Ratings judged hundreds of different spirits as part of this year’s competition, assigning each one a score based on quality, value, and packaging. The judging panel – made up of distributor representatives, bar managers, mixologists, hospitality professionals, and other industry experts – first tasted each spirit blind to evaluate its quality. The judges then assessed the price and packaging before determining its overall score.

Barr Hill Gin’s 100-point score was accompanied by a Gold Medal, along with the following distinctions: Spirit of the Year, Gin of the Year, Best in Show by Country, and Best Spirit of the Year by Quality.

Caledonia Spirits, the producer of Barr Hill Gin, was named the Distillery of the Year. As a whole, this year’s competition featured a wide array of gins, vodkas, rums, tequilas, and whiskeys from every corner of the globe, including Ireland, England, Spain, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, Mexico, Jamaica, and the United States, among others.

All three of Caledonia Spirits’ flagship spirits – Barr Hill Gin, Tom Cat Gin, and Barr Hill Vodka – took home major awards in 2020. In addition to the above honors from USA Spirits Ratings, Barr Hill Gin was awarded a Triple Gold at the MicroLiquor Spirit Awards, along with Platinum and Consumers’ Choice honors at the SIP Awards.

Tom Cat Gin was awarded with Platinum and Best in Class medals at the SIP Awards, while Barr Hill Vodka earned Double Gold and Best of Category distinctions at the American Distilling Institute’s Judging of Craft Spirits.

Caledonia Spirits uses raw northern honey as an ingredient in all three of its super-premium spirits. Produced and bottled at its solar-powered distillery in Montpelier, Vermont, the Barr Hill spirits are available at retailers, bars, and restaurants across 32 U.S. states.
