Vermont State Police In April 2018, Manchester Police Department Chief Michael Hall contacted the Vermont State Police regarding an incident that had occurred in May 2017. Chief Hall reported that an amount of U.S. currency, over $2000.00, had been seized during a police investigation in 2017. This currency had been logged into the Manchester Police Department as evidence at the time of the investigation. In March 2018, it was discovered that the currency was missing from the Manchester PD evidence room.
Chief Hall contacted the Vermont State Police and requested an investigation into the matter be conducted. Manchester Police Officer Daniel Steere had been temporarily assigned as the department evidence custodian during the time that the money was believed to have gone missing.
Steere was placed on administrative leave by the Manchester Police Department while the criminal investigation was still ongoing. Later, Steere’s employment with the Manchester Police Department was terminated as a result of an internal investigation conducted by that department.
Through evidence collected from the department, interviews with involved parties and financial statements, it is believed that Steere used his position within the department to take the seized currency and divert it for personal use.
On 05/12/20 detectives from the state police Bureau of Criminal Investigations issued Steere a citation to appear in the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court in Bennington to answer the charge of Grand Larceny. He is to appear in court on 7/13/20.
No further information is currently available. The affidavit of probable cause will be filed with the court and made public following arraignment. Questions regarding Steere’s employment should be directed to the Town of Manchester.
