Vermont Business Magazine Lieutenant Governor David Zuckerman early Monday sent an email announcing that he would run for governor. Several media outlets said last week that he would do so. The formal announcement, Zuckerman said, will come via his campaign Facebook page at 11 am.
Progressive Zuckerman, from Hinesburg, is a two-term lieutenant governor. Democrat Rebecca Holcombe previously announced her candidacy. Republican Governor Phil Scott is expected to seek a third term but has not made a formal announcement.
As part of the fallout from Zuckerman's decision is that Senate President Pro Tem Tim Ashe said he would run for lieutenant governor, as Zuckerman seeks to move up the ladder.
No incumbent governor has lost re-election in 60 years.
David Zuckerman Statement:
Today, I am announcing my candidacy for Governor of the State of Vermont to build a future that includes all of us and leaves no one behind.
Together, I know we can:
Build an economy with jobs that pay enough for workers to support themselves and their families
Support our youth and commit ourselves to fighting the climate crisis in a way that builds economic opportunity and ensures a healthy future for all
Expand health care access while bringing costs under control
Make sure Vermonters can afford to go to Vermont colleges or train in a technical field for a successful future
Build more affordable housing
Ensure all Vermonters, those who are indigenous, those who were born here and those who have chosen to move here, are part of our state’s vibrant and inclusive future
Throughout my years in public service, I have worked to bring your voice to the policy debates and decisions being made in Montpelier. I have listened carefully as Vermonters shared their economic struggles and I’ve observed well-intentioned leaders trying to find solutions.
I’m running for Governor because I see great opportunities to address these struggles and I want us to really do something about the economic challenges we face.
I want to thank my family and all of you who have supported me through the years and who encouraged me to run.
I look forward to a vigorous campaign, full of debates, events and respectful discussions with Vermonters regarding their ideas and visions for the future of our great state.
Thank you for your support,
