Vermont Business Magazine The Upper Valley Business Alliance (formerly the Hanover and Lebanon NH Chambers of Commerce) announces the launch of the Upper Valley MedTech Collaborative (UVMTC). The purpose of UVMTC is to broaden awareness of the many companies located in the Upper Valley region of Vermont and New Hampshire that are researching, developing and manufacturing medical devices.
UVMTC was created to bring medical technology entrepreneurs, companies, and investors in this medically-rich region of New Hampshire and Vermont together to address the complex challenges which exist when trying to bring a device to market and to grow their medtech businesses. By collaborating and leveraging the collective experience and insights of those working in the medtech field, UVMTC strives to provide a conduit where entrepreneurs can help each other solve problems and achieve success.
“The Upper Valley Medtech Collaborative is the culmination of years of interactions with New Hampshire and Vermont based innovators trying to solve a myriad of healthcare challenges,” said Greg Lange, Chief Business Development Officer at Simbex Medical Device & Development, a research and product development company located in Lebanon, New Hampshire. “Through the UVMTC, we now have a mechanism to bring medtech stakeholders together, in order to promote collaboration, encourage investment, grow businesses, support our current employees and attract potential employees.”
The Upper Valley MedTech Collaborative held a kickoff event on March 4th at the Montshire Museum of Science. Over 40 companies and numerous entrepreneurs, inventors, developers, investors and advisors participated. Rick Greenwald, CEO of Simbex, honored the lifetime accomplishments of Bob Dean, President of Synergy Innovations. Dr. Dean has been a founder or co-founder of 10 companies including Hypertherm, Creare and Simbex, and professor of engineering at both MIT and the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College.
Dr. Barry Schweitzer, Senior Business Development and Licensing Manager of Dartmouth’s Technology Transfer Office, said, “In tech communities, one often hears about needing a “critical mass” of cutting edge, high quality companies to have a thriving ecosystem in a particular location. The Upper Valley MedTech Collaborative demonstrates quite convincingly that we have this critical mass of medical technology companies in the Upper Valley, and that investors, entrepreneurs, and industry partners should take notice.”
The UVMTC is an initiative of the Upper Valley Business Alliance, which was formed in 2019 as a merger of the Hanover and Lebanon Chambers of Commerce. The mission of the Upper Valley Business Alliance is to support regional economic growth in the Upper Valley through sustainable economic development, attracting a talented workforce and advocacy.
“UVBA is thrilled to serve as the umbrella organization for the MedTech Collaborative,” states Tracy Hutchins, Executive Director of the Upper Valley Business Alliance. “Our main priorities are working to promote and encourage new business development in our region. As these important technologies are launched, we want to keep these medtech companies in our region to grow and add new jobs. Supporting the MedTech Collaborative will help to create a tech hub here in the Upper Valley. We are excited to launch this initiative.”
UVMTC thanks several companies for supporting this initiative including Simbex Medical Device, Downs Rachlin Martin PLLC, The Magnusen Center for Entrepreneurship at Dartmouth, Celdara Medical, Schwegman, Lundberg & Woessner, and Mascoma Bank. Also, Merritt & Merritt, Tyler Simms & St. Saveur CPAs, Lodestone Biomedical and the Montshire Museum.
The UVMTC plans to hold 4-6 networking events in 2020 as well as an annual conference.
