Vermont Legislative Climate Solutions Caucus Students across Vermont and around the world are mobilizing for the Global Climate Strike, and the Vermont Legislative Climate Solutions Caucus wants activists to know lawmakers support their efforts. Peaceful strikes will be held September 20, followed by a week of events to highlight the urgency of climate action.
Supported by many environmental advocacy groups, the student-led statewide coalition has organized a major strike at Burlington City Hall at noon. Smaller strikes are set for Montpelier, Brattleboro, Middlebury, Rutland, Chester, Manchester, Bennington and other towns, highlighting the need for local leadership to combat the climate crisis.
“Vermont needs to reclaim the mantle as a climate leader,” says State Senator Chris Pearson (P/D-Chittenden County), who co-founded the nonpartisan Climate Solutions Caucus in 2012. “Governor Scott’s leadership hasn’t matched the challenge, so the Climate Solutions Caucus is stepping up. We’ve been working all spring and summer to present practical solutions to help strengthen Vermont’s economy and meet greenhouse gas reduction goals.”
“Vermonters want to move into the clean energy technology of the future,” says caucus co-chair Representative Sarah Copeland-Hanzas (D-Bradford). “We can set the vision of how we get there. And we can do it in a way that creates good Vermont jobs and ensures equity for rural and low-income Vermonters.”
The Climate Solutions Caucus (CSC) is a broad coalition of legislators dedicated to advancing cost-effective and equitable energy policies to transition Vermont to a sustainable future. More than 40 members of the CSC met in May to begin developing policies around building efficiency, transportation, renewable energy and the climate economy for the 2020 session.
The Climate Solutions Caucus includes approximately 80 House and Senate members and meets weekly during the legislative session (January to mid-May) in the Vermont State House. Meetings are open to the public and dates are posted by the Office of the Sergeant-at-Arms.
