State Police to hold annual presentation of awards & promotions Friday

Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont State Police will hold its Annual Awards Ceremony at 10 am Friday, September 6, 2019, in the House Chamber of the Vermont State House in Montpelier. Governor Phil Scott, Commissioner of Public Safety Michael Schirling and Colonel Matthew T Birmingham, director of the state police, will honor members of the agency and others for acts of heroism and community service. They also will recognize 28 sworn and two civilian members of the state police who are receiving promotions.

“I am pleased and proud to recognize the members of the Vermont State Police and the public who have provided exemplary service to the people of Vermont,” Scott said. “I know I speak for all Vermonters when I say how appreciative and grateful we are for these dedicated public servants.” 

Added Colonel Birmingham: “Every year we take time to honor and say thank you to members of our organization and the public who embody the best of the Vermont State Police, risk their lives for their fellow Vermonters, and uphold VSP’s core values: courage, honor and integrity.”

After the ceremony, formal photographs with the Vermont State Police Honor Guard and distinguished guests will take place. A reception with light refreshments will follow in the Cedar Creek Room at the Statehouse.

  • Detective Sgt. Megan Sheridan – For her exemplary work in the Helen Jones homicide.
  • Betty Wheeler – For her outstanding work on the data collection project.

Division Commander’s Award

  • Sgt. Travis Valcourt – For his lifesaving efforts on August 16, 2018, in Westminster.

Lifesaving Award

  • Angela McDevitt – For actions taken Feb. 14, 2018, when she came forward with information of a possible plot to shoot and kill students at Fair Haven Union High School.
  • Trooper Charles Gardner - For actions taken Aug. 11, 2018, when he responded to a call for assistance regarding a man suffering from a drug overdose.
  • Damien Larose – For actions taken Dec. 28, 2018, when he entered a burning building to rescue a woman in distress.
  • Trooper Stacey Corliss; Sgt. Daniel Solomita, Hartford Police Department; and Patrolman Aleya Leombruno, Hartford Police Department – For actions taken May 18, 2019, when they assisted in saving the life of a civilian attempting to take their own life.
  • William Mayo, Charles McAllister, and Scott Ovitt – For their actions taken June 26, 2019, when they assisted in saving the lives of two civilians trapped in a burning building.
