Improved cardiac rehab access at RRMC

Thu, 11/07/2019 - 9:50am -- katie

Vermont Business Magazine Rutland Regional Medical Center Cardiac Rehab Program recently announced the expansion of available sessions in their cardiac rehab gym for Phase II patients. Phase II refers to patients who are in the acute phase of their recovery after a cardiac event.  According to the American Heart Association, patients with certain conditions and procedures will benefit from a cardiac rehab program. These include a heart attack, heart failure, angina, coronary artery disease (CAD), coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and valve replacement.

“Phase II is a critical part of the patient’s recovery,” said Dr. Michael Robertello, Cardiologist, at the Rutland Heart Center. “It has been proven that cardiac rehab reduces recurring heart events and mortality rates. This phase includes medically supervised exercise sessions, counseling, and education.”

The Rutland Heart Center has experienced an increase in the number of patients requiring this critical service in our community. This improved access will be beneficial to the patients in need of service.

For many years former patients were provided access to the Cardiac Rehab Gym on Monday and Friday mornings at Rutland Regional. In order to accommodate the increased number of patients in their acute phase of recovery, as of January 1, 2020, the hospital will be able to accommodate Phase II patients only. “Once people complete Phase II, they are able to independently continue on their path to physical health and heart strength using the tools and education they have received,” said Dr. Robertello.

“Eliminating the cardiac rehab gym access to our former patients for the Monday and Friday mornings was necessary to accommodate the increased number of patients who require medically supervised cardiac rehabilitation,” said Elizabeth Kyhill, Senior Director, Multi-Specialty Services. “We recently notified the 50 people who are affected by this change, giving them two months’ notice to seek an alternative facility to continue their own personal health program. We would like to commend these individuals for their continued healthy living lifestyle and want to help them during this transition.”
