ermont Business Magazine Ocean State Job Lot (OSJL), a leading discount closeout retailer headquartered in Rhode Island, celebrated the grand opening of its new store at 241 South Main Street in Rutland on Saturday. This 45,850-square-foot location, a former Hobby Lobby store, marks the retailer’s 139th store in the northeast and the second in the state of Vermont – the first located in St. Johnsbury. The opening restores vibrancy to this formerly-vacant retail location as well as creating 50 new jobs.

During the celebration, Ocean State Job Lot executives presented a $500 check to the Rutland Community Cupboard and a pallet of non-perishable food valued at $1,700 as part of the Ocean State Job Lot Charitable Foundation’s “Close to Our Heart” program. OSJL also donated an entire tractor-trailer truck of food to its regional partner, the Vermont Foodbank valued at $22,000. “Ocean State Job Lot is committed to the communities in which we operate," said David Sarlitto, Executive Director, Ocean State Job Lot Charitable Foundation. "We're thrilled to open our doors in Rutland and we look forward to a long partnership ahead."

“We are excited to open our second Ocean State Job Lot in Rutland County,” said Robert Couras, Store Team Leader. “We hope the community will love our incredible selection of seasonal items perfect for summer, as well as our household goods, pet supplies and kitchen and pantry staples, and all at amazing prices.”

In addition to its Close To Our Heart donation, Ocean State Job Lot donated $1,000 in gift cards following the conclusion of its ‘Discount Dash for Charity,’ which featured local media and community members competing in a timed scavenger hunt for select Ocean State Job Lot products. Rebekah Stevens of the Rutland Community Cupboard took first place, collecting a $500 gift card; Rutland Mayor David Allaire won a $250 gift card for Dodge House for veterans, and Jason Goodspeed of WZRT-FM won a $250 gift card for the Rutland Humane Society.

Local elected officials and OSJL executives participated in the ceremonial ribbon cutting including Mayor David Allaire, Alderwoman Sharon Davis, Alderman Matt Reveal, Alderman Matt Whitcomb, Alderwoman Melinda Humphrey, Alderman Bill Gillam, Senator Cheryl Hooker, Senator Brian Collamore, Representative William Notte, and Representative Larry Cupoli.
