Farms welcome the public to dig into Vermont’s agricultural economy August 9th-15th
Vermont Business Magazine For the fifth consecutive year, farmers across Vermont are once again opening their barn doors and garden gates to welcome the public for a behind-the-scenes look at Vermont’s vibrant working landscapes. Vermont Open Farm Week 2019 will run from Friday, Aug. 9 through Thursday, Aug. 15, and feature over 72 events at over 40 farms across the state. Events are live and sorted by day and location on DigInVT.com.
Governor Phil Scott joined the crew at Green Mountain Girls Farm in Northfield to help them prepare for the week-long event.
“Farming is such an important part of Vermont’s economy, our communities and our agricultural traditions and culture,” said Governor Phil Scott. “For five years, Open Farm Week has offered the opportunity to see all Vermont farms have to offer, meet with our proud farming families and learn more about the incredible work they do. Everyone should take advantage of the great events happening throughout the state.”
Open Farm Week is a celebration of the diversity of Vermont’s agricultural community and the many unique farm experiences meant to educate and entertain. It is an opportunity for everyone, Vermonters and visitors, to get outdoors and get a behind-the-scenes look at where our food comes from.
“Agriculture has long been the backbone of Vermont’s economy,” says Jake Claro, director of the Vermont Farm to Plate Network at the Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund. “Vermont Open Farm Week and other agritourism events like it not only helps to sustain Vermont’s agriculture economy by bringing customers directly to the farms but also gives visitors from Vermont and around the world an opportunity to meet and connect with the farmers, animals, and plants behind their favorite Vermont foods.”
Activities vary and include chances to milk cows and goats, harvest vegetables, learn to make cheese, take behind -the-scenes farm tours, and enjoy delicious meals together!
