Vermont State Police On September 9, 2018, at approximately 1547 hours, State Police were notified of a two-car motor vehicle collision on Vermont Route 125 in the Town of Cornwall. Prior to State Police arriving on scene, Operator#1, identified as Deane Rubright (44) of Shoreham, VT was pronounced deceased at the scene. Through further investigation, it was found that prior to the collision, Rubright was travelling westbound on Vermont Route 125 at a high rate of speed and Operator#2, identified as Thomas Frankovic (45) of Cornwall, VT was travelling eastbound at approximately 50mph in a marked Cornwall Volunteer Fire Department Truck with lights and siren activated. The preliminary investigation indicated that after cresting a hill and seeing other vehicles stopped in the westbound lane of travel for the oncoming fire truck, Rubright applied his brakes and proceeded to cross the centerline into the eastbound lane of travel colliding with Frankovic. Both vehicles were totaled as a result of the collision.
State Police were assisted on scene by the Middlebury Police Department, Middlebury Rescue, Middlebury Heavy Rescue, Middlebury Fire Department, Bristol Rescue, and the Cornwall Fire Department
The accident is still under investigation at this time.
