Historical Society offers diverse educational opportunities

Vermont Business MagazineThe start of a new school year is the perfect time to take advantage of educational opportunities and initiatives from the Vermont Historical Society (VHS), available for students from elementary through high school. From field trip opportunities to classroom resources to individual learning programs, VHS is committed to providing outstanding educational resources to Vermont teachers and students in all parts of the state.

The Vermont History Museum in Montpelier offers students an opportunity to explore the depth and breadth of Vermont’s story through interactive displays and themed exhibits. VHS offers free admission for school groups, making a day at the museum an affordable highpoint of a trip to the state’s capital.

The VHS extends free museum admission to homeschooling families as well. Additionally, the museum hosts the popular History for Homeschoolers program, a monthly series of classes on Vermont history topics ranging from architecture to US Presidents from the state.

Every year, over 300 students in grades 5 through 12 participate in the Vermont History Day program. Students engage in historical research and develop historical thinking skills by creating projects about US and world history topics and by competing in the state contest in April. The 2019 theme of “Triumph and Tragedy in History” offers many possibilities for personalized learning in a variety of fields including history, research and writing, performance or web design.

To reach all corners of the state, VHS offers six History Lending Kits for educators to use in their classrooms. These large boxes contain artifacts, resources and lesson plans to help teachers to bring Vermont history to life on topics and time periods from prehistory through the 19th century.
