Vermont Business Magazine Rutland Regional Medical Center has been distinguished as among the top 10 percent in the nation, and the only hospital in Vermont, for Joint Replacement, according to a national study by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. Rutland Regional once again received a 5-Star rating for Total Knee Replacement making it 9 years in a row (2011-2019) and is the only hospital in Vermont to receive this rating.
Rutland Regional was also one of only two hospitals in Vermont to receive a 5-Star for Total Hip Replacement (2019), and one of only three hospitals in Vermont to receive a 5 Star in the Treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), making this the second year in a row for this recognition (2018-2019). Every year, Healthgrades evaluates the performance of approximately 4500 hospitals nationwide for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions. These achievements are part of the findings featured in the Healthgrades 2019 Report to the Nation.
A 5-Star rating indicates that Rutland Regional Medical Center’s clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or performing the procedure being evaluated. According to Healthgrades, from 2015 - 2017 patients treated at hospitals receiving the Joint Replacement Specialty Excellence Award have, on average, a 59.5 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.
“For a community hospital like Rutland Regional to be recognized as among the top 10 percent in the nation for Joint Replacement is a watershed moment for us. This important distinction along with the other three awards, underscores our exceptional patient care and extraordinary staff and physicians. These awards belong to them,” said Claudio Fort, President and CEO of Rutland Regional Medical Center.
“All of these awards would not be possible without the coordinated efforts of such a highly professional and devoted team. Everything they do is to ensure the best comfort and care for our patients. It is my deepest privilege to work beside them every day,” said Melbourne Boynton, MD, Orthopaedic Surgeon and Chief Medical Director at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
Rutland Regional is consistently ranked among the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation for overall patient safety, receiving the prestigious Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award in 2015.
Healthgrades, the nation’s most trusted source of healthcare provider information, also gave high marks to Rutland Regional as one of the Top 10 percent in the Nation for Outstanding Patient Experience in 2015. This award identifies the top 10 percent of hospitals for which the hospital’s own patients report superior experiences.
In addition to achieving the distinction noted Rutland Regional was also a Five-Star recipient for Gallbladder Surgery in 2017.
“With so many choices for care, consumers often find that their health journey can be difficult to navigate,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Healthgrades. “Information about hospital quality is helpful as they make decisions for their health, and Rutland Regional Medical Center has distinguished itself as an exceptional organization for Joint Replacement.”
