Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont State Police Bomb Squad safely disposed of commercial explosives including dynamite found in a private residence in Wallingford on Wednesday, November 14, 2018, according to a VSP press release. On Thursday, November 1, VSP-Rutland was contacted by an employee from an auction company regarding a suspected explosives magazine found at a property in Wallingford that was being prepared for sale. Information obtained by the auction company suggested explosives still were stored within the magazine. A trooper from the Rutland field station responded to the scene and verified the presence of the magazine. The magazine was determined to be secured. The former property owner was found to have previously held a Vermont explosives license. A bomb technician responded to the scene to complete further assessment on Friday, November 2. At that time, the contents of the magazine could not be verified. A bomb technician returned to the property on November 9 and collected blasting caps that had been found on the premises and made further assessments on the magazine.
The Vermont State Police Bomb Squad returned to the scene Wednesday, Nov. 14. The magazine was opened remotely and found to contain dynamite and other commercial explosives. The explosives were disposed of in a controlled burn. The Vermont State Police Bomb Squad was assisted in the operation by the Wallingford Fire Department and Rescue Squad along with agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
The Vermont State Police Bomb Squad, commanded by Lt. David Petersen, is the only accredited public safety bomb squad in the state. The team averages more than 100 responses annually, including preventative missions (such as sweeping a location before a special event) and reactive responses to explosive devices, suspicious packages, old or unclaimed explosive material, and illegal fireworks.
