Vermont Business Magazine A Duxbury company, Birdsbesafe LLC, has gained significant recognition from the American Bird Conservancy (ABC), a national organization in Washington, DC. The national bird conservation organization included Birdsbesafe cat collar covers in their educational listing of “Safe Solutions for Cats”. The ABC “supports simple solutions to keep pet cats and wildlife safe.” Their website link: https://abcbirds.org/catio-solutions-cats/ refers readers to the merits of Birdsbesafe collar covers as a anti-predation device, shown by scientific field study, to provide “visual cues [which] can alert wildlife to the presence of a cat and prevent harmful interactions”.
The patented Birdsbesafe products, were invented by Duxbury native Nancy Brennan, and are made in the U.S. and marketed around the world. The cat “collar covers” use bright colors to warn birds that a stealthy cat is hunting nearby, and birds fly to safety. An independent U.S. field study showed an 87% reduction in birds caught.
Newly expanding marketing has led to Birdsbesafe products being offered by Simon King Wildlife (online) in the U.K., via a network of veterinarians in Iceland, by a bird-related ecommerce business in Switzerland, and in the catalogue of the leading French bird conservation group, La Ligue de Protection Oiseaux, a BirdLife International member organization. In the U.S. and Canada, the product’s profile continues to rise, as an important way to protect birds from cats. An estimated 50 million pet cats go outdoors in the U.S. alone, where they can and do hunt birds. The important bird conservation issue of protecting birds can be best solved directly by cat owners taking responsibility and using a solution that fits their needs.
