Vermont Business MagazineThe Addison County Economic Development Corporation (ACEDC) Board of Directors has announced a $1,000 contribution to help in the establishment of The Makery, and challenges others in the community to contribute to this innovative Addison County Maker Space. Maker Spaces encourage local innovation as well as collaboration and can also be a conduit for entrepreneurship. The vision of The Makery is “a place where people imagine, experiment, network, collaborate, and create for personal & professional growth”. The mission of The Makery is “to engage the greater community in pursuits related to occupations, hobbies, or crafts that grow the technical and creative economy of Vermont”. ACEDC is a founding partner in this effort to establish The Makery, to be located at the Hannaford Career Center.
Hannaford Career Center, a career & technical educational facility locatedin Middlebury VT, previously held a very successful MiniMaker Fair and surveyed the local business community which indicated strong support for this local maker space.
ACEDC is represented on the Maker Space Steering Committee which is currently working on fundraising, including an effort to crowdfund $6000. This seed amount must be raised to be eligible for consideration by the Gannett Foundation for a grant of between $25,000 and $100,000 for The Makery. The Makery also secured a $30,000 grant from ACEDC member Middlebury College’s Fund for Innovation which will help support the organization with staffing from interns and mentors.
The public is cordially invited to tour the Hannaford Career Center at 51 Charles Avenue in Middlebury and hear a brief presentation about the capital campaign for The Makery on Friday, May 4, 2018 at 9:45 am. This will be followed by brunch at 10:30 am in the Glass Onion, the student run restaurant. To realize this vision, HCC has started a capital campaign. The initial funding opportunity is a $25,000-$100,000 grant through the Gannett Foundation. To be eligible for consideration for the grant, HCC must crowdfund $6,000 from the community.
