Ken Squier to be honored by CVCC

Sat, 03/03/2018 - 11:47am -- tim

Vermont Business Magazine Legendary sports broadcaster Ken Squier will be honored by the Central Vermont Chamber of Commerce at their Annual St Patrick’s Day Breakfast. As St Patrick’s Day falls on a Saturday this year, The Chamber will be getting a jump on the “Wearin’ of the Green” by meeting on Tuesday, March 13th. The breakfast will kick off at 7:30am at the Capitol Plaza Hotel and Conference Center in Montpelier.

While not dubbed a “Citizen of the Year” tribute, it is intended to be a relaxed, friendly way for The Chamber to recognize and thank those citizens of Central Vermont whose contributions have significantly improved the lives of those of us who live, work, and visit here.

Ken and his family have owned and operated Radio Vermont Group since 1931.  In addition to providing near daily commentary and advice through RVG’s flagship station, WDEV, Ken is well known as the host of the ever-popular “Music to Go to the Dump By,” heard every Saturday.

A 2018 inductee into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Ken has a long association with motor sports, as the former owner of “The Nation’s Site of Excitement,” Thunder Road.  In 1969, he co-founded the Motor Racing Network.  1979 saw Ken do the first flag-to-flag broadcast of the Daytona 500, which he dubbed, “The Great American Race.”

Ken began his motor sports broadcasting career at age 14 and has also broadcast ice skating, golf, and tennis.  He was a play-by-play announcer for CBS' United States coverage of the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville and the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer.

Ken is a Charter Member of the Vermont Broadcasters Hall of Fame.  A member of the Vermont Sports Hall of Fame, Ken has been recognized five times as the Vermont Sportscaster of the Year.  He was inducted into the New England Auto Racers Hall of Fame in 2002.  In addition to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Ken is in the Oceanside Rotary Club of Daytona Beach Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame and the New England Auto Racers Hall of Fame.

In addition to a few surprises, our speakers honoring Ken include Ken’s daughter Ashley Jane, WDEV Intern Extraordinaire, Jasper Goodman and Chamber Chair, Joe Choquette.  Our Premier Sponsor is Downs Rachlin Martin.  Gold Sponsors for the event include Community Bank, NA and Northfield Savings Bank.

Tickets, which must be purchased in advance are $25 for Chamber members and $30 for not-yet Chamber members.  Tickets are available by calling the Central Vermont Chamber at 802-229-5711, sending an email to info@centralvt.com or by visiting our website at www.centralvt.com.
