SunCommon builds portable solar outreach system for Puerto Rico recovery

Vermont Business Magazine Volunteers from SunCommon in Waterbury are building a portable solar-powered trailer right now. The Solar Outreach System (SOS) is being constructed at the Waterbury location and will be used in a location still recovering in Puerto Rico or for future hurricane damaged islands.

“This goes to the heart of our mission to use our business as a force for good. What makes this effort even more meaningful is that it’s not just SunCommon doing the work. We’re part of a group of solar companies called Amicus Solar Cooperative that has gotten together to make sure our fellow Americans are not forgotten.”

- Jessica Edgerly Walsh, SunCommon Director of Marketing

Each SOS has charging stations with 15 lockers, which include two USB ports and an electrical outlet. People can bring cell phones, laptops, and even small appliances to be charged. Clean water is another huge need in these communities. Each SOS includes a 5-gallon water filtration system that can clean 500 gallons of water per day. There are also floodlights to create a community gathering space.

“Working on these trailers for Puerto Rico is a tangible and purpose-filled experience.I know these solar-powered trailers will make a meaningful impact on many lives, so seeing the impact of my help is fulfilling. Working alongside other Amicus folks also connected me to the larger movement that we’re a part of – working to make the world a healthier and happier place.”

- Maggie Twitchell-Wood, SunCommon Volunteer

Once completed, the SOS from Waterbury will begin its journey to Puerto Rico. Three Solar Outreach Systems have already been used in Puerto Rico. Three more are being built now, including the one in Waterbury.
