Vermont gets initial victory in maple syrup labeling over FDA

Vermont Business Magazine Congressman Peter Welch (D-Vermont) tweeted today that Vermont has won a preliminary victory in the effort to defeat the FDA’s proposed rule to require “added sugar” labels on pure maple syrup in the text of the Farm Bill. The Farm Bill is expected to pass the House and Senate this week.

The full language can be found in Sec 12516. If enacted it blocks the FDA from requiring “that the nutrition facts label of any single-ingredient sugar, honey, agave, or syrup, including maple syrup, that is packaged and offered for sale as a single-ingredient food bear the declaration ‘includes X g Added Sugars.”

Tweet: Big win for syrup in the new ! We stopped in its tracks the FDA’s head-scratching plan to require the words “added sugar” on pure syrup labels. Chalk one up for common sense!
