Vermont Business Magazine Community Mutual announced in a press release Monday that Thomas A White, president, will be retiring from his position effective December 31, 2018. The Troy, NY-based insurer is part of the Union Mutual group, which is headquartered in Montpelier. On October 1, 2003, White joined Community Mutual as Executive Vice President. After Robert Carpenter’s retirement in March of 2005, the Board of Directors elected White as Community Mutual’s next president.
White was instrumental in a number of key initiatives including Community Mutual’s affiliation with Union Mutual in 2013. Under his oversight, the Company has subsequently grown its Direct Written Premium 85% and Surplus nearly 230%.
During his 40-year insurance career, White has accomplished much. White started his insurance career on February 1, 1979 at Eastern Mutual as a Field Representative. He left in 2003 as Executive Vice President-Claims, Secretary and Director. Tom served as Chairman of the New York Insurance Association (NYIA) in 2002 -2003. NYIA also honored Tom with their Distinguished Service Award on May 29, 2014.
White attributes his well-rounded knowledge of the insurance industry to the relationships he developed with fellow employees, agents, colleagues, attorneys, independent adjusters, service bureaus and others he has worked with over the years.
White is a Life Member of the East Greenbush Fire Company serving 43 years. He also servedas a Town of East Greenbush Fire Investigator and volunteered for 20 years as a Rensselaer County Fire Investigator. He was honored by the Rensselaer County Legislature by Proclamation for assisting another local township in the investigation of a total loss house explosion.
He said he looks forward to spending more time with Colleen, his four children and six grandchildren.
