Vermont Business Magazine Democratic gubernatorial candidate Christine Hallquist has announced that her campaign is returning the four corporate contributions taken early in the campaign.
“After watching Phil Scott take large sums from Monsanto and other out of state corporations, it has become clear that my leading on the issue of campaign finance is more important than ever. I realize that I should have had my personal connections donate through their personal accounts. I can now proudly says no corporate money will be associated with my campaign. My campaign is returning these monies because it is the right thing to do. My taking corporate money, no matter the source, muddied the waters and it is critical that no one question my commitment to clean and fair elections. Should I become the Democratic nominee, I will advocate unequivocally for true campaign finance reform and will support the banning of corporate campaign contributions so that Vermonters can have confidence in the integrity of their elections and in our democracy,” said Christine Hallquist.
“I am really happy to announce that our campaign is finally in a position to return these contributions. I really appreciate the outpouring of support from voters and activists around Vermont and am proud to work for a corporate contribution free campaign. I particularly appreciate the patience and understanding that we’ve been granted by voters and supporters - it has given me faith that our campaign can both do the right thing, and that win or lose, we will be united in the fight to take back the governorship this fall” Said Cameron Russell, Campaign manager.
“I am proud that we have not compromised our commitment to our employees nor our commitment to being a grassroots campaign. As I have traveled throughout Vermont, it has become clear to me that it is important that we be a leader on the issue of campaign finance and I am thankful to everyone who has supported us in being that leader,” Christine Hallquist said.
“I really appreciate that throughout this process of returning these contributions, campaign leadership has remained committed to our unionized staff - I am so proud to be a part of a campaign that has shown it can lead and do right by its workers,” said David Glidden, shop Steward for the Campaign Workers Guild.
