Vermont Business Magazine Norwich University, a national leader in cybersecurity and digital forensics education, has proclaimed October as cybersecurity awareness month and has joined the National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NSCAM) effort as an official “Champion.” President Richard W Schneider signed a proclamation on September 25, 2017, recognizing Norwich’s vital role in identifying, protecting from and responding to cyber threats.
Recognized every October, NCSAM was created as a collaborative effort between government and industry to ensure all digital citizens have the resources needed to stay safer and more secure online while also protecting their personal information. As an official Champion, Norwich University recognizes its commitment to cybersecurity, online safety and privacy.
“Cyber security is everyone’s responsibility,” said Norwich University’s Chief Information Security Officer George J. Silowash. “Technology touches our lives in some way every day. Whether at home, at work, or in the community, everyone needs to do their part to protect themselves in order to ensure a safer cyber environment for all of us.”
Coordinated and led by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), NCSAM has grown exponentially since its inception, reaching consumers, small- and medium-sized businesses, corporations, educational institutions and young people across the nation and internationally. NCSAM 2016 was an unprecedented success, generating more than 2,260 unique news stories – an increase of 30 percent from NCSAM 2015’s media coverage. Kicking off NCSAM’s 14th year, this October presents a new opportunity to expand cybersecurity and privacy education and awareness globally.
The Norwich University Office of the Chief Information Security Officer, along with students, staff and faculty, will be hosting a number of activities throughout the month that are free and open to the public:
- Tuesday, Oct. 3, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., Northfield’s Brown Public Library: “Securing our Children” – Do you know what your children are doing online? Do you want to learn how to protect them? Join Norwich University information security experts and the Northfield Police Department for a night of learning about how to protect your children online.
- Thursday, Oct. 5, 1 p.m., Norwich University’s Milano Ballroom – Dr. Heather Roszkowski, Norwich alumnaeand the University of Vermont Medical Center Network Chief Information Security Officer will be speaking about cyber security in healthcare.
- Thursday, Oct. 12, 1 p.m., White Memorial Chapel – Federal agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Albany Field Office, will be speaking about a number of different cyber security topics.
- Oct. 20 & 21– Tech Jam, Champlain Valley Expo, Essex Junction, meet with Norwich University computer security and computer science faculty and students and learn about cyber defense, cyber safety and digital forensics.
- Thursday, Oct. 26, 1 p.m., White Memorial Chapel, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice and the Director of Norwich’s Peace and War Center and terrorism expert Travis Morris will be discussing the latest in online radicalization.

Ranked #2 by the Ponemon Institute for cyber security in the U.S., Norwich University programs are consistently ranked among the best in the nation for cyber security education.
