Burlington native Carter to be ordained at St Michael’s September 16

Vermont Business Magazine Edmundite Deacon Michael R Carter, a native of Burlington and a 2012 Saint Michael’s College graduate, will be ordained to the priesthood on Saturday, September 16, at the Chapel of St Michael the Archangel on the Saint Michael’s campus in Colchester. Burlington Bishop Christopher J Coyne will be the presider and homilist for the 11 am Mass, and will ordain Carter. The Society of Saint Edmund, or “Edmundites,” founded Saint Michael’s College, and they are based on campus.

Born in Burlington, the son of Richard M Carter and Kathleen M Carter of Burlington, Michael Carter, now age 27, attended Christ the King School in Burlington through eighth grade and then Burlington High School, where he was selected by his classmates as the featured Class Speaker for his 2008 graduation.

A member of the Saint Michael’s College Class of 2012, he subsequently earned a bachelor’s degree in religious studies with a minor in political science. He received a Master of Divinity degree from Boston College in 2016.

His current assignment as a transitional deacon is as an assistant to his Edmundite brother, Father Charles Ranges, SSE (Saint Michael’s Class of 1967), pastor in Essex Junction and Essex Center. Carter also teaches at Saint Michael’s and assists in Edmundite Campus Ministry. He will continue in these roles after his ordination.

The Society of St. Edmund invites the faithful of the Diocese of Burlington and beyond to attend Carter’s ordination. The most recent ordination for the Society of St. Edmund was in 2014, when Father Lino Oropeza, SSE, was ordained at Saint Michael’s, but before that, the Edmundites had not had an ordination since 1996 for Fr. Brian Cummings, SSE (Saint Michael’s Class of 1986), now director of Edmundite Campus Ministry at Saint Michael’s/director of Saint Anne’s Shrine in Isle LaMotte.
