Vermont Business Magazine Justin Johnson has been elected to the Brattleboro Retreat's Board of Trustees. Johnson, a native of Australia, is currently the head of Global Strategic Markets at MMR, LLC, a government relations, advocacy, and public relations firm based in Montpelier, where he oversees efforts to help international businesses and governments meet their goals under the 2015 Paris Climate Accord.

“The Brattleboro Retreat is a critical part of Vermont’s system of mental health care,” said Johnson.  “The staff is incredibly dedicated, and as a trustee I hope to help the Retreat build its programs and continue providing critical services to Vermonters and others who need treatment for mental health and addiction issues.”

Before joining MMR, Johnson served as Secretary of Administration under Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin.  Prior to that, he served in the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources as Deputy Secretary.

“Justin’s considerable experience in both government and the private sector will be valuable in our governance of the hospital,” said Elizabeth Catlin, chair of the Retreat Board. “He is passionate about the Retreat's mission, and eager to put his great skill set to work on its behalf.  We are very lucky to have him join us."

Johnson has twenty years of experience working in local, state, and federal government in both the United States and Australia.  His specialties include public policy development and regulation, government operations, risk management, non-profit management, budgeting and operations, human resources, and communications.

In 2015 he was awarded the Environmental Protection Agency’s Ira Leighton Award in recognition of his service and leadership on environmental issues in Vermont.

Johnson resides with his family in Barre.
