Vermont Business Magazine The University of Vermont Health Network has named Eric Miller as the Network’s deputy general counsel and senior advisor. The appointment was effective Monday, May 22. Miller served as the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont from June 2015 to February 2017. He also served on the UVM Medical Center Board of Trustees from January 2014 to June 2015 while practicing law as a principal in the law firm of Sheehey, Furlong & Behm PC. During his tenure at the firm from 1999 to 2015, Miller provided strategic advice and representation to businesses and individuals, with a special focus on health care related matters.
In his new position, Miller will be responsible for managing legal matters and providing Network leadership with legal advice and opinions as part of the General Counsel’s Office. Additionally, in partnership with the organization’s Government and Community Relations team, he will serve as a public liaison with external groups and community partners to address key issues and strategic initiatives in both Vermont and New York.
“Eric’s unique skills, experience and perspectives will serve the Network well as we continue to develop innovative ways to partner with community organizations and focus on the well-being of the people in the region we serve,” said John Brumsted, MD, UVM Health Network president and chief executive officer. “He will be able to hit the ground running and add immeasurably to the capabilities of our leadership team.”
As US Attorney for Vermont, Miller focused on developing collaborations with diverse partners to address some of the most pressing issues facing Vermont, including the opiate crisis, civil rights violations, and cyber security. In an effort to address these and other issues, he worked closely with law enforcement agencies, non-profit organizations, health care providers, educators, the faith community, and the business sector. He also partnered with Rick Hartunian, US Attorney for the Northern District of New York, to address areas of common concern on both sides of the lake, including the opiate crisis and northern border issues.
“I believe strongly in the social mission of the UVM Health Network and its work to improve the health of people in Vermont and Northern New York while working to contain costs,” Miller said. “The Network is doing some of the most exciting and creative work in the country to design a high-quality, financially sustainable health care system. I look forward to being part of this effort.”
Miller received an AB from Duke University, magna cum laude, 1992, and a JD from Yale Law School, 1995.
Miller's compensation was not released. On the form 990 for 2014, General Counsel Spencer Knapp's salary was $559,560. CEO Dr John Brumsted's was $1,498,888.
