Vermont Arts Council funds light installation in Montpelier

The Vermont Arts Council recently awarded a $15,000 “Animating Infrastructure Grant” to Langdon Street Alive (LSA) for an artistic lighting canopy over the street to be designed and installed this summer.

A lighting design will be selected for its capacity to dazzle viewers with color and light and for its potential to complement the historical architecture of the street. The lighting canopy will help animate Langdon Street at night to complement its daytime vitality.

The LSA Steering Committee will conduct a search, review proposals, and select the artist for this very significant piece. LSA is looking for individuals with expertise in public lighting to help select and curate the design of this piece. As they did last year, LSA will review artists’ design proposals as a committee and select an artist with the most transformative vision for the space. LSA will work with the artist to facilitate the lighting installation.

Lights Over Langdon will be joined by returning popular pieces like the Floral Bridge, The Kickstand Popup Park, and the large 16’x 24’ Landscape Mural. Look for upcoming Calls to Artists for Lights Over Langdon and other projects atwww.langdonstreetalive.org.

ABOUT LANGDON STREET ALIVE

Langdon Street Alive is led by a Steering Committee made up of local professionals, and already has many collaborators including students from Montpelier High School and Vermont Technical College. Commissions will be awarded for pieces according to the funds the group is able to raise. So far, Langdon Street Alive has raised almost $20,000 from local and state-wide partners with an eventual goal for 2017 of $50,000. Local downtown revitalization group Montpelier Alive also is a key supporter of the project.
Langdon Street Alive is the third open space project in Montpelier organized by local architect Ward Joyce, who was responsible for the Rialto Bridge Parklet in 2014 and the Montpelier Pocket Park across from City Hall from 2015 and being reinstalled this summer.

“Langdon Street Alive has been a widely successful, community driven and community supported program. The process has initiated very interesting conversations about public art and the importance of placemaking; and it has created a rare opportunity for leadership roles for our local artists.”Ashley Weitzenberger, Executive Director, Montpelier Alive
