Vermont Business MagazineUSCitizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will present 82citizenship candidates to the USDistrict Court Vermont District during two separate naturalization ceremonies in Chittenden County,June 21 and June 23. The first will be at Essex High School and the second will be atEthan Allen Homestead in Burlington.

USCIS to hold citizenship ceremony at the Essex High School
The Honorable John MConroy, USMagistrate Judge, USDistrict CourtVermont District, will preside over the June 21ceremony at Essex High School, and will administer theOath of Allegianceto America’s newest citizens. USCIS Vermont Service Center Director, Laura Zuchowski, will welcome the new citizens and guests. Julio Thompson, Civil Rights Director, Office of the Vermont Attorney General will provide keynote remarks. The National Anthem will be performed by a USCIS staff member and other musical selections by “Rearranged”.
The 61 citizenship candidates, ranging in age 19 to 78, originate from the following 27 countries: Bahamas, Belarus, Bhutan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, People’s Republic of China, Colombia, Congo, Germany, Ghana, Grenada, Honduras, India, Ireland, Jamaica, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Romania, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Ukraine, United Kingdom, and Vietnam.
USCIS naturalization ceremonies in Vermont are judicial ceremonies and with court approval this ceremony is being held at Essex High School forpublic awareness of the U.S. citizenship process. It also provides the employees of USCIS Vermont Service Center the opportunity to attend and participate in a citizenship ceremony--the final step in the path to citizenship, which often begins with a visa petition processed at the VSC.

Crawford, USDistrict Court Judge, U.S. District CourtVermont District, will preside over theFri., June 23, ceremony at the Ethan Allen Homestead and will administer theOath of Allegianceto America’s newest citizens. Congratulatory remarks will be given by Phyllis Drury, President, Ethan Allen Homestead Board.
The 21 citizenship candidates, ranging in ages 21 to 65, originate from the following 13 countries: Belgium, Bhutan, Brazil, Canada, People’s Republic of China, Congo, France, India, Mexico, Romania, Rwanda, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Naturalization is the process by which U.S. citizenship is conferred upon foreign citizens or nationals after fulfilling the requirements established by Congress. After naturalization, foreign-born citizens enjoy nearly all the same benefits, rights and responsibilities that the Constitution gives to native-born U.S. citizens, including the right to vote. During fiscal year 2016, just over 750,000 people were naturalized at ceremonies throughout the country and around the world, including over 650 individuals through the St. Albans field office.
USCIS encourages new citizens and guests to share their naturalization ceremony experiences and photos through social media, using the hashtag #newUScitizen.
Though not in Chittenden County, a ceremony celebrating Independence Day is scheduled forJuly 4at the Calvin Coolidge Homestead in Plymouth, Vt. An advisory will be provided as date nears.
