Vermont Business Magazine On Monday, January 16, 32 Vermont Housing & Conservation AmeriCorps members will join three Rutland area non-profits to complete community service projects. AmeriCorps members across the nation observe a national day of service— “a day on, not a day off” — in recognition of Martin Luther King, JrDay.
The VHCB AmeriCorps members will be involved in three different projects, serving with The Nature Conservancy, theFood Bank and Dismas House. Volunteers with The Nature Conservancy will join on-going efforts to restore the native forests of the Hubbardton River Clay Plain. A second group will gather at The Vermont Food Bank to package food for Rutland area families. A third group will spend the day organizing and cleaning at the Dismas House of Vermont where former prisoners live together with students as they transition to independent living.
Hannah Snyder, Volunteer Coordinator for the Vermont Food Bank says, “AmeriCorps volunteers will be packing bags of kid-friendly, nonperishable, vitamin-fortified foods for hungry children in our community. Teachers place these bags into kids’ backpacks on Friday afternoons so they have some yummy meals for their weekend. Volunteers are ensuring that children don’t have to spend the weekend worrying about where their next meal will be coming from.”
The VHCB AmeriCorps program is a project of the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board, based in Montpelier. VHCB AmeriCorps members serve at 32 non-profit agencies throughout Vermont focusing on issues of affordable housing, land conservation, and environmental education. The VHCB AmeriCorps program is recruiting new members for positions beginning in March in Montpelier, Waterbury, Burlington, Bennington, Brattleboro, Randolph and Stowe.
