Vermont Business Magazine Demont & Associates in partnership with the Association of Fundraising Professionals Northern New England (AFP-NNE), has opened nominations for a $5,000 college scholarship to a youth aged 10-17; the AFP- NNE Demont Scholarship Award for Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy. The recipient of this scholarship award will be chosen from a pool of nominations by a New England Region Philanthropy Committee comprised of development professionals working in the fields of education and youth services in Northern New England. An advisory council of distinguished leaders who work with youth will assist with publicity about the scholarship. The deadline for nominations is May 21, 2017.
The recipient will be announced at the AFP-NNE’s annual conference during its National Philanthropy Day awards ceremony in New Hampshire on November 2nd. Teachers, non-profit leaders, development professionals, and others working with young people are encouraged to submit nominations for this scholarship award.
Adults who know of a young person’s philanthropic work are urged to go to the scholarship website to fill out the nomination application at http://www.afp-nne.org/youth-in-philanthropy-nomination-form.html.
Robert Demont, President of Demont & Associates says, “We are delighted to recognize the efforts of an outstanding youth philanthropist with this scholarship award. We know that there are many very deserving kids doing inspirational work raising funds for many worthwhile programs in our region.”
The purpose of the Youth Philanthropy Scholarship is to foster greater interest among youth in the fundraising profession, says Demont. “We know that there is no greater joy than to work in a field where you can make a lasting difference for good, and we are ready to learn and grow from their involvement and their example.”
The 2016 scholarship award went to Vermonter Riley Callen. Over the past five years, Riley has had three separate craniotomies to remove two benign brainstem tumors. She has invested her time and efforts into raising awareness in support of brain tumor research. Through the support and guidance of her friends and family she created Be Brave For Life, an official 501(c)3 charitable organization that conducts local events such as an annual Hike-A-Thon and Basket Bonanzas, a raffle featuring merchandise and services donated from local Vermont businesses and families. To date, through Riley’s incredible determination and strength, Be Brave has raised over $100,000 to support brain tumor research and awareness with two major donations of $40,000 each to the Boston Children’s Hospital and the Barrow Neurological Clinic in Phoenix, AZ. It was an honor and privilege to award Riley Callen the 2016 award for Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy. For more information on Riley and Be Brave For Life, please visit: https://bebrave.life/
