Vermont Business Magazine Brattleboro Memorial Hospital President and CEO Steven R Gordon has announced changes within the leadership of the hospital’s Information Services Department, including the promotion of Steven P Cummings from Chief Implementation Officer to Vice President for Information and Support Services and Jonathan Farina from Director of Information Services to Chief Compliance and Security Officer.

“These promotions have been in the planning stages for quite some time, and coincide with the major information technology upgrade we are undertaking at BMH,” said Gordon. “Both Jon and Steve have been playing critically important roles in overseeing this initiative, and their promotions reflect the value they add to our ongoing efforts to improve patient care.”
Farina has been at BMH as Director of Information Services since 2003, overseeing many significant advances in information technology systems as the hospital has expanded their services and implemented electronic medical records and billing systems. He had been considering retirement, but has agreed to stay on in this new capacity. “Over the past 13 years in my IS position, I have learned a lot about how the other departments at the hospital function,” said Farina. “In my new role as Compliance Officer, I hope to raise the bar for compliance at BMH in an industry that is faced with ever-increasing regulations and oversight.”
Cummings came to BMH in April of 2015 to lead the selection and implementation of the new Cerner CommunityWorks Electronic Health Record system to serve the hospital, physician practices, Lab, Pharmacy, Radiology, and Patient Financial Services. He received his BSN in Nursing from Boston University School of Nursing and his MBA with a concentration on Management Information Systems from Babson College. His career began with nursing positions in the Neurology and Respiratory Unit at University Hospital in Boston and the Critical Care Unit of Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MA, before he transitioned into the field of implementing clinical information systems at hospitals and health care systems including Children’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, NH, and Noble Hospital in Westfield, MA.
“I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the BMH team and the great work they do across multiple departments,” said Cummings. “This new role gives me the opportunity to orchestrate a major technology transition from inception to implementation, using skills and insights I’ve acquired from my nursing career as well as my work in information technology and systems management, so it’s an exciting challenge.”
Cummings’ promotion is effective immediately, while Farina will transition to his new role upon the completion of the Cerner conversion in April of 2017.
