Vermont Business Magazine Today, the Planned Parenthood Vermont Action Fund Independent Expenditure - PAC (PPVTAF IE PAC) released their first television ad of the general election cycle. Titled “Different Choices,” the ad lays out the case for why Sue Minter is the strongest pro-choice candidate for Vermonters.
“Earlier this month, we proudly endorsed Sue Minter for governor,” said Creston Lea, Chair of the PPVTAF IE PAC Board. “With this television ad, we are putting action behind our words.”
“While access to birth control, abortion, and services at Planned Parenthood are under unprecedented attack nationally, here in Vermont we have actually expanded access,” Creston continued. “With so much at stake, we need a Governor who will continue to lead the way. Sue Minter has always stood up for safe and legal abortion. She will be a governor who doesn’t just support women’s health – she will be a proactive leader on expanding access to women’s health care. As Minter has said many times, she is committed to a woman’s right to choose ‘without exception.’ She has demonstrated a strong, lifelong commitment to the issues Planned Parenthood Action Fund IE PAC cares about. “

Seven Days Fact Checker: “Accurate” To Say “Phil Scott Wants To Restrict A Woman’s Right To Choose.” According to Seven Days, “Pro-choice advocates may view restrictions such as those Scott supports as a slippery slope toward outlawing all abortions - and may be rightly concerned about the slow erosion of abortion rights. But putting conditions on abortion such as parental notification for minors is not the same as categorically opposing a woman's right to choose. Its an oversimplification - and misleading - to say he is "against" a woman's right to choose. A more accurate statement from the Gekas campaign might have read, "Phil Scott wants to restrict a woman's right to choose." [Seven Days, 9/12/12]
2014: “The Vermont Right To Life Political Action Committee Recommended” Scott “Because Scott Said He Would Support A Bill Requiring Parents Of Minor Girls Being Informed Before Abortions.”According to the Burlington Free Press, “Scott reacted to one other Corren poke during the campaign - a television ad aimed at female voters that claimed Scott had been endorsed by Vermont Right to Life. Scott supports a woman's right to chose abortion, but the Vermont Right to Life political action committee recommended him over Corren because Scott has said he would support a bill requiring parents of minor girls being informed before abortions. Scott complained that he wasn't endorsed. Corren said recommend and endorse have the same meaning.” [Burlington Free Press, 11/2/14]

Scott Recommended by Right to Life. According to Seven Days, “It is true that the VRLC expressed support for Scott during his primary-election contest with retired Wall Street banker Bruce Lisman. The organization sent a mailer to its members over the summer calling on them to back Scott and Republican lieutenant gubernatorial candidate Randy Brock.” [Seven Days, 9/22/16]
The Vermont Right To Life Committee Clarified That It Did Not Endorse Phil Scott But Rather “Recommended Phil Scott As A Preferable Candidate For Pro-Life Voters To Support” And Noted That The Recommendation Was Based On Scott’s Support Of Parental Notification Laws For Abortion. According to the Burlington Free Press, “The Vermont Right to Life Political Action Committee says Dean Corren, Progressive/Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, is misleading voters by suggesting his opponent in the lieutenant governor race, Republican Phil Scott, has been endorsed by the anti-abortion group. Mary Hahn Beerworth of Vermont Right to Life said the organization's political arm has "recommended Phil Scott as a preferable candidate for pro-life voters to support." She added, "The VRLC-PC is fully aware that Lt. Gov. Phil Scott is pro-choice and he is not, therefore, 'endorsed' by the organization."Scott earned the group's recommendation because he said he would support legislation to require notification of parents before a minor could have an abortion, Hahn said in a statement Friday.” [Burlington Free Press, 10/25/14]
Vermont Right to Life Seeks to Have Universal Recognition of “The Sanctity of Human Life from Conception through Natural Death.” According to their website, “The mission of the Vermont Right to Life Committee is to achieve universal recognition of the sanctity of human life from conception through natural death. In pursuit of that mission, VRLC, through peaceful, legal means, seeks changes in public opinion, public policy, the law, and individual behavior that respect the right to life and reject abortion, euthanasia, and other actions that deny the right to life.” [Vermont Right to Life, accessed 9/20/16]
Vermont Right to Life Is Affiliate of National Right to Life. According to their website, “In 1974, “Voice of the Unborn” became a chapter affiliate of the Washington D.C. based National Right to Life Committee and the title of the organization was changed to The Vermont Right to Life Committee. True to the original purpose of the founding members, the Vermont Right to Life Committee exists to restore legal protection to those members of the human family who are threatened by abortion, infanticide and euthanasia.” [Vermont Right to Life, accessed 9/20/16]
