Ribbon cutting for the new downtown transit center in Burlington transforming transit in Vermont

Vermont Business Magazine VHB is the project manager providing design and construction phase services for Green Mountain Transit’s (GMT) new Downtown Transit Center (DTC) in Burlington. The DTC is a newly constructed central facility and attractive gateway to the transit system for the City of Burlington and features a modern facility that supports growing ridership, improves the rider experience and promotes economic development.

VHB is managing a team of professionals in civil engineering, architecture, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, structural engineering, security, and traffic engineering. The project was designed and constructed in close coordination with GMT, Burlington Public Works, and Burlington Electric Department to carefully and thoughtfully integrate the facility with the Burlington Downtown area.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held October 13, at St Paul Street, Burlington. Speakers included The Honorable Senator Patrick Leahy, Burlington Mayor, Miro Weinberger and other federal, state and local officials.

The new transit center building features an indoor ticket window, a concession area, restrooms, and passenger seating at street level. A lower level will be provided for GMT staff, which will include a break room, restrooms, a kitchen and a lounge, as well as utility rooms for the station climate control systems. A 250-foot long, 17-foot wide covered platform will be provided for ten bus berths. Benches, heat, and wind screens will be also be provided here for waiting passengers. Monitors will display arrival and departure information and schedules. The facility includes a video security system to monitor activity 24 hours a day. Both entrances/exits to the facility will be controlled by a transit priority traffic signals to ensure buses depart on time.
