Saxtons River shooter taken into custody

Vermont Business Magazine During the early morning hours of November 20, 2016, Vermont State Police Troopers, including members of the Tactical Support Unit, responded to reports of numerous gunshots being fired in the area of River St in Saxtons River.

Anthony Smith, 53, of 13 River St, was subsequently taken into custody without incident.

VSP personnel from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Major Crime Unit, Uniform Division, and Crime Scene Search Team worked throughout the day investigating this incident.  Investigators spoke with residents, many of whom had been evacuated earlier, and documented damage, consistent with being caused by the discharge of firearms, to multiple residences/structures in the area.  Several firearms were seized.

Smith is being lodged ($25,000 bail) at Southern State Correctional Facility and is due to appear in court (Windham County Superior Court, Criminal Division)tomorrow (November 21.)  Smith will face charges of Reckless endangerment, Felony unlawful mischief, and Use of a weapon while committing a crime.

No one was injured during this incident.  Smith’s actions caused thousands of dollars of property damage and placed several residents and responding Troopers in fear for their safety.

State Police were assisted during initial response by Golden Cross Ambulance and Saxtons River Fire Department.

The investigation thus far has not revealed that Smith was targeting any specific person when he began shooting, and there is no known on-going threat to public safety.
