Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Brewers Association (VBA) welcomes two breweries to its membership: Ten Bends Beer in Hyde Park, VT and Farnham Ale and Lager in South Burlington, VT.
Owners and brewers Mike Scarlata and Jason Powell founded Ten Bends Beer, named for the ten distinct bends in the Lamoille River, in early 2015. Both Scarlata and Powell were homebrewers for many years and are equal partners in brewing the beer and managing all operational aspects of the business. Their operation in Hyde Park consists of a three barrel brewing system where they brew a variety of small batch ales inspired by the unique nature of Vermont. Ten Bends officially opened to the public on August 6, 2016 and is open Friday through Sunday for tastings and growler fills.
Farnham Ale and Lager is a sister brewery to one that opened in Farnham, Quebec in 2013. Owner Alex Jacob established Farnham Ale and Lager in South Burlington in October 2015, and temporarily operated under the Infinity Brewing brand. They established Farnham’s 15 barrel brewhouse next door to the old Infinity operation and are dedicated to producing good beer at a decent price. In addition, they are committed to supporting their local community and maintaining the high standards that go along with brewing beer in Vermont. Farnham Ale and Lager opened to the public in October 2016 and offers beer for sale in pints, growlers, and cans.
Ten Bends and Farnham are the latest to join the VBA’s now 49 members that produce craft beer throughout Vermont. Home to over 50 breweries, Vermont has more breweries per capita than any other state and produces an average of 17.4 gallons per 21+ adult.
