Iconic Stowehof Inn & Resort sold

Vermont Business Magazine The Stowehof Inn & Resort in Stowe has been sold to an affiliate of Saltaire Properties Inc, according to Four Seasons Sotheby’s International Realty, which helped broker the sale. Terms of the deal were not released. The Stowehof Inn & Resort is a well known landmark in the Stowe community situated on 26 acres high upon a hill with views of Mount Mansfield and the Green Mountains. The Edson Hill Road Inn was built in 1949 by eccentric architect Larry Hess, who was instrumental in developing the Inn into one of the most unique, old world style Inns in the United States. The Inn was used as the setting for an Alan Alda film, "The Four Seasons," in 1981. Until this recent sale the Inn was owned by the Grimes family.

Saltaire specializes in acquiring and repositioning mid-sized independent hotels in cultural, coastal and mountain markets with an emphasis on an authentic sense of place, design quality, and customer experience. In Vermont, Soltaire also owns The Shire in Woodstock.

Linda Jones, an Associate with the Stowe office of Four Seasons Sotheby’s International Realty, and who was instrumental in helping find the buyer, said, “We are thrilled that Bob Thomas and Diedre Savage from Saltaire Properties Inc have purchased the Stowehof Inn & Resort which is an iconic landmark in the Stowe market. They are very experienced in the hotel business and will bring a lot of new energy to the resort and make sure it remains a vibrant part of the Stowe community for the foreseeable future.”

The Inn's Web site says it originally was built as an Austrian Ski House and B&B. Utilizing old barns, houses and even a church to provide a unique feel to the building, Hess also masterminded the structural use of the “petrified” maples that were taken from the grounds and now support the iconic, covered bridge-like structure of the entry.

In 1968 Hess sold the Stowehof to CV Starr, founder of the insurance giant now know as AIG. AIG also owns (now through a spinoff) Stowe Mountain Resort. The Stowehof was used as a corporate retreat for VIP guests and executives. The Inn eventually was sold to the Grimes family, who trace their family history in Vermont to the 1760s.
