Vermont Business Magazine According to a statement issued by the town today, on Tuesday, July 19, 2016, at precisely 8:09 pm, Shelburne’s Wastewater Treatment Facility Number 1, located off Crown Road, experienced a level sensor malfunction resulting in approximately 110,000 gallons of unchlorinated wastewater released into Lake Champlain.
Upon discovery of the malfunction this morning, Shelburne Wastewater personnel completed the following steps to mitigate the concern to the public: (1) Notified the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) via their website; (2) Modified the discharge process to bypass malfunctioning level sensor to guarantee chlorine is issued for proper ongoing disinfection; (3) Contacted the proper electrical engineers to correct and/or replace level sensor. (4) Informed Shelburne’s Selectboard, Natural Resources & Conservation Commission, local health officer, posted information publicly on the town’s webpage, and sent a press release to area media outlets and other interested parties.
The Wastewater Department will work closely with Vermont DEC on further required action.
