Vermont Business Magazine Norwich University signed a new agreement with Korea University and the Republic of Korea’s Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Cadet Command, for the semester long exchange of cadets between the two universities. This is the first agreement of its kind between the ROTC programs of the Republic of Korea and a foreign nation; until a recent change, the law in Korea did not permit cadets to study abroad for an entire semester. Norwich University will welcome the first two cadets from Korea University, a top university in the country, in the fall of 2016.
This agreement is the direct result of a Norwich student who studied abroad at Korea University through a third party program provider in the fall of 2012. While there, he connected with the Republic of Korea’s Army ROTC Department during his time at Korea University. That paved the way for a visit to Norwich in fall 2013 of Korea University representatives, including two officers, to discuss the possibility of the agreement.
In March 2016, Mindy Ward, senior coordinator of International Student & Scholar Services, traveled to Seoul, South Korea to meet with Captain Mihee Park of the Republic of Korea Army to discuss specifics related to the agreement. The final agreement was approved by Norwich University, Korea University, and the ROK Cadet Command the following June.
“It is a privilege and an honor to welcome our first Korean University cadets to Norwich in the fall,” Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs Guiyou Huang said. “This is a great development in our efforts to greater internationalize our campus and will complement the entire Norwich community.”
Norwich University’s tradition of welcoming international students is nearly as old as the institution. Norwich’s first international students began attending classes in 1827 and came from Greece, the United Kingdom, Cuba and the Bahamas, making Norwich the second school in the country to offer an international program.
Over the past academic year, 69 Norwich students studied abroad and Norwich welcomed 69 students from 23 different countries. Currently 68 Norwich students are studying abroad this summer.
