Air Guard celebrates 70th anniversary during the Wings Over Vermont air show

Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Air National Guard's 158th Fighter Wing is celebrating its 70th Anniversary and will be participating in the Wings Over Vermont Air show.  This event will include an increased number of aircraft in and around the local Burlington, Vermont area. Air show events to include training flights will be  conducted Thursday, 11 August through Monday, August 15, 2016.

Local community members can expect periods of increased air traffic, and possible increased aircraft noise outside of normal operating hours during the daylight hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. for the arrival and departure of the transient aircraft participating in the air show.

Weather

The current weather forecast for Burlington, Vermont on August 13th and 14th includes conditions that may be severe at times (e.g., thunderstorms, high winds, etc.).

Inclement weather NOT affecting public safety during the Wings Over Vermont Airshow (clouds, showers, etc.) may delay or modify some of the performing acts’ routines but will not necessarily cancel the entire airshow for the day, nor will it drive a waterfront evacuation.  Visitors and spectators are encouraged to come prepared for all types of Vermont summer weather conditions.

If weather could potentially impact public safety, as determined by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), the Burlington Emergency Services on scene (BPD, BFD, USCG) will direct an evacuation of the Burlington Waterfront.

This evacuation will instruct all attendees (general public, airshow volunteers, staff, and most first responders) to move east away from the waterfront park, and into shelter downtown.  Shelters will include air show contracted buses and CCTA buses. In addition, patrons can shelter at the Hilton Garage, Burlington Town Center, and parking garages in the western area of the city. Depending on the severity of the storm, this will temporarily or indefinitely postpone the Airshow.

The Wings over Vermont staff, in coordination with Emergency Services, will decide on a case-by-case basis whether to cancel the show for the remainder of the day, or coordinate for a time after which the show will resume.  This information will be disseminated to the public via the Media (TV, Radio, on-line) and real-time on all Wings over Vermont social media (Facebook, Instagram: @wingsoververmont, twitter: @wingsovervt).  In either case, a postponement or cancelation during one day affects that day only (i.e., Saturday) and does NOT imply a cancellation of both days (i.e., Sunday).

Please monitor your local news, radio and television stations as well as Wings Over Vermont social media sites (Facebook @wingoververmont, Twitter @wingsovervt ) for the most up-to-date information.

Parking

The 2016 Wings over Vermont Airshow has designated public parking with shuttle bus service to the Waterfront Park.  Parking is available at three primary locations:  The Burton Flagship Store on Industrial Pkwy & Queen City Park Rd., the Vacant Store Lot (formerly Kmart) on US Hwy 7/Shelburne Rd. & Queen City Pkwy., and at the Burlington International Airport on Airport Dr. & US Hwy 2/Williston Rd.  Additionally there will be handicap-only parking at the Burlington Waterfront near Perkins Pier, as well as all other areas.  Visitors should use I-89 to I-189 to get to Burton/Kmart areas, and US 2 or 2A to US 2 to get to the Airport.  There will be signage directing traffic to the appropriate lots.

There is a $20 fee per car (cash only) to help defray the cost of the Shuttle Bus.  Entrance to the Airshow itself at the Waterfront is free.  Shuttle buses will run from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, with the majority of bus traffic running between 8-10 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.  Handicap accessible buses will run to all lots.  The commute via shuttle bus may take between 45 and 75 minutes, depending on traffic.

Other than Handicap-only parking, there is no Wings Over Vermont Airshow-designated public parking at the Waterfront Park or downtown Burlington.

There will be free & secure bicycle parking at the Waterfront, provided by Local Motion.  Green Mountain Railroad is also offering special routes to the Waterfront from Charlotte, Shelburne and South Burlington, with parking at their stations/stops at those origins.

Though there will be numerous Wings over Vermont volunteers helping direct traffic and ensuring safety of the attendees, there will be limited security at each of the lots.  Please do not leave valuables in your vehicle.

Wings over Vermont recommends taking advantage of the Airshow-designated satellite parking & Shuttle buses, car-pooling, other public transportation, bicycling and walking to the Airshow, in lieu of driving your vehicle to the Waterfront or downtown Burlington.
