Vermont Business MagazineMarlboro Collegehas launched theRenaissance Scholars program,a full tuition scholarship that seeks extraordinary students from across the nation who possess intense intellectual passions, a desire to leave the world better than they found it, and the tenacity to realize their most ambitious goals.TheRenaissance Scholars programwill award a full tuition scholarship to a single student in all 50 states, and theDistrict of Columbia. Scholarships are valued at$38,000per year and are renewable for four consecutive years of study, contingent of good academic and community standing. Selection criteria are based on each student's leadership, innovation, perseverance, and community service.
"We're looking for a few rugged intellectuals who are ready to bring their talents to our campus community nestled in the foothills ofVermont'sGreen Mountains," saidKevin F. F. Quigley, president ofMarlboro College. "Our Renaissance Scholars will use their passion for learning, interdisciplinary intelligence, and global perspective to enrich our culture of unconventional thinking and bold action."
Marlboro'sundergraduate program emphasizes interdisciplinary, student-designed study, and a self-governing community. Faculty and undergraduates work together closely and frequently through small discussion-based classes, one-to-one tutorials, Plan of Concentration advising sessions, and other forums. More than 75 percent of undergraduates go on to further study in graduate school; many of them report theirMarlboroexperience uniquely prepared them for advanced scholarship.
"Renaissance Scholars defy easy categorization, which makes finding and recruiting these 'needles in a haystack' challenging for a small college like ours," saidBrigid Lawler, dean of admissions atMarlboro College. "When we find them – and vice versa – their wide-ranging interests, bold confidence, and craving for intellectual adventure makes them ideally suited for aMarlboroeducation."
Marlboro Collegecultivates a close-knit, intentionally small learning community where independent thinkers can explore their deepest interests, collaborate with faculty as colleagues, and set the course for their own intellectual and professional pursuits. Located in southeasternVermont,Marlborocomprises an undergraduate campus in the town ofMarlboroand a graduate center in nearbyBrattleboro. Combined enrollment for undergraduate and graduate programs is less than 500 students.
