UVM Medical Center joins elite group of 'Centers of Excellence' for treating Huntington’s disease

TheUniversity of Vermont Medical Center's Frederick C Binter Center for Parkinson's Diseaseand Movement Disorders is one of just 29 centers in the US to be named “Centers of Excellence” by the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) for 2015. Other designees include Stanford University, Duke University, the Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins University. Centers were cited for "an exemplary commitment to bringing more comprehensive care" to Huntington's Disease (HD) patients and families.

To receive the designation, HDSA Centers must provide an "elite team" approach to care and research, with patients having access to experts in neurology andpsychiatry.Binter Center Director James Boyd, MD, a neurologist at The University of Vermont Medical Center and associate professor of Neurological Sciences at The UVM College of Medicine, credited the breadth and coordination of services the Center now provides with its inclusion in this year's group of honorees. "This is a great honor, particularly given the size of our institution."

Huntington's disease is a genetic neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the gradual development of involuntary muscle movements and progressive deterioration of cognitive processes and memory.
