Vermont Business Magazine Vermont-based publisher Chelsea Green in White River Junction will bring out the first major book chronicling the issues being raised by US Senator Bernie Sanders in his campaign for president of the United States. The Essential Bernie Sanders and His Vision for America is what the publishier says is the only book that outlines, in Sanders’ own words and actions, his presidential agenda for America. The book draws heavily from Sanders himself, including excerpts from the Congressional record, public speeches, and media interviews.
From his time as mayor of Burlington, his long service as our lone Congressman, and now as a US Senator, Vermonters have always known where “Bernie” stands on any given issues. This book also shows how the people of Vermont have greatly shaped his perspective and shaped the proposals that are helping to build a national, grassroots campaign.
Authored by Jonathan Tasini, a well-known writer, analyst, and former president of the National Writers Union, this accessible book details the key issues drawing people to Sanders’ campaign: universal health care, free higher education, tackling wealth inequality, reforming Wall Street, rebuilding the middle class, rethinking immigration and foreign trade policies, and supporting children, seniors, the environment, and caring for our veterans.
The book’s in-house project editor was Shay Totten, Chelsea Green’s communications director, and a former Vermont political reporter and columnist who covered most of Sanders’ House and Senate campaigns. The book is scheduled to be released on the day after Labor Day, be in stores by mid-September, and will have a 50,000-copy first printing. It will be simultaneously released as an eBook.
Like Sanders, Chelsea Green is Vermont-based, independent, and not owned by a multinational corporation or billionaires. In 2012, Chelsea Green became employee-owned, and Sanders has long been a champion of employee ownership.
“This is an important book because his ideas are serious and are sparking a necessary national conversation on where we’re headed as a country, and in many ways Vermont has been ahead of the curve these crucial issues,” said Margo Baldwin, Chelsea Green’s president and publisher. “This book lays out how we can reform our current political, social, and economic systems, topics that Chelsea Green has been publishing books on for more than 30 years.”
In true fashion of other crash, important political books from Chelsea Green — such as the New York Times bestsellers Don’t Think of An Elephant!, The End of America, and Obama’s Challenge — The Essential Bernie Sanders will be in stores less than eight weeks from when the manuscript was turned in by the author.
