Vermont Business MagazineNew weekly unemployment claims in Vermont fell back below 1,000 after a two week spike, where claims edged over 2,000. Claims earlier this year had been running consistently lower than those of last year, but in recent months are nearly the same.Forthe week of January 3, 2014, there were 978 new, regular benefit claims for Unemployment Insurance in Vermont. This is a decrease of 1,038 from the previous week's total, and the same as they were a year ago. For comparison, claims were running under 500 during the summer.
Altogether 8,624 new and continuing claims were filed, an increase of 439 from a week ago and 795 fewer than a year ago. The Department processed 0 First Tier claims for benefits under Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08), the same asthe previous week.
There were no Second Tier claims for benefits processed under the EUC08 program. There were zero Tier III claims. The Tier I, II and III programs expired on December 28, 2013. Congress would need to act to renew these extended benefit programs.SEESTORY
The total for all programs was 8,624 claims, 439 more than last week, and 1,454 fewer than the same time last year.

Vermont's unemployment rate fell one tenth to 4.3 percent in November as jobs were added and the labor force grew. It was as low as 3.3 percent in May.SEESTORY.
