Norwich University’s Sullivan Museum presents new exhibit on cavalry

Vermont Business Magazine The Norwich University Sullivan Museum and History Center presents “Saddle Up! Norwich Cavalry: Training, Touring and Tactics on Horseback,” with an opening reception to be held on Friday, January 22, from 3:30-5:30 pm. The state’s only Smithsonian Affiliate, the Sullivan Museum and History Center is free and open to the public. The story of the Norwich Cavalry and its establishment is full of wonderful images of the days when equines were part of the daily life at the University. Fascinating facts and “firsts” at Norwich come to life with life size imagery, sounds and objects from Norwich’s cavalry history. This exhibition looks back at the time when Norwich ruled on the Polo fields and made history in the new sport of endurance racing.

The exhibition will included details of daily riding instruction and care of the three breeds of horses in the program, and also chronicles the brief, but famous hunt for Pancho Villa. In 1916 President Ira Reeves released Col. Frank Thompkins to support this effort on behalf of the US Army, and Norwich horses were at their side. Daily updates were made in the NY Times on their tour seeking out this infamous character on both the American and Mexican landscape.

Join us for an in-depth look at the distinguished history of the Cavalry at Norwich. This exhibition will open January 18, 2016 and continue through June 30, 2016.

The Sullivan Museum and History Center is located on the Northfield campus of Norwich University. It is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the academic year.
